For Those Planning a Home Birth
At MAIA, we feel that to plan a birth at home with a midwife is to claim your own power and right to give birth to your baby. We assist you and serve to aid your empowerment in this process. Our work is driven by our profound respect for the transformations our bodies and beings are capable of. Our relationship with you is based in mutual trust, clear communication and our shared belief in your autonomy.
We help to create a safe and supportive environment in which you are free to explore your pregnancy and birth experience as fully as possible. Each prenatal visit lasts one hour, so that we have ample time for counseling, in addition to providing education and clinical care. In this way, your prenatal care is tailored to your specific needs.
Our approach to labor and birth is one of calmness and receptivity. We acknowledge that there is no one way to give birth. Our role is to ascertain that your birth is progressing within the realm of normal while upholding the spiritual process at hand.
During the weeks following birth, we make ourselves available to assist you in the integration of your birth experience as you cross over into the realm of new parenthood. Daily visits during the first days of your baby’s life provide you with the presence of an experienced lactation professional should the need for breastfeeding help arise. Attentive care during this time often serves to prevent common difficulties, and provides you with great reassurance during a time of emotional vulnerability.
We are comfortable working with all families: young, old, single, group, partnered, queer, straight, transgender, alternative, traditional and everything in between.
Whether having a Home Birth or a Hospital Birth, we recommend considering our Childbirth Education Class for LGBTQ Families.
For Those Planning a Hospital Birth
Finding out you are pregnant, even when you did everything possible to make it happen, comes with a variety of emotions. Many intentional families are ready for prenatal care very early in pregnancy. Early pregnancy visits are designed to address unique and specific concerns such as:
• miscarriage prevention
• emotional changes during pregnancy
• nutrition for a healthy pregnancy
• coping with first trimester discomforts
• exercise do’s and don’ts |
• sex during pregnancy
• designing a self care plan
• getting the support you need
• choosing a care provider
• any other questions you may have |
Early pregnancy visits are one hour in length.
Concurrent Care
Many clients choose to come in regularly during their pregnancies to enhance and personalize their existing prenatal care. This concurrent care offers the time and attention provided by a midwife during the highly transformational time of pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Single women, queer families, pregnant transmen, and other nontraditional families benefit from MAIA’s open and affirming approach. Concurrent prenatal visits include counseling, nutritional support and preparation for birth, as well as other topics that may arise during the course of pregnancy.
We are also available by phone to those in need of referrals, resources or information.
Our goal is for every person to have the birth experience they desire.
Postpartum and Early Parenting Support
Many parents come to MAIA for the much needed support and guidance during postpartum and early parenting. The transformation that parents experience in the first months of a baby’s life is deep and profound. As personal identity shifts in profound ways, many new parents find that the relationship to self and others shifts as well. Undergoing such a process in the face of newfound responsibilities and lack of sleep can be quite a disorienting experience. For queer families and single moms, the stresses of new parenthood may be further compounded by feeling the effects of marginalization in our culture. The reflection and support offered by a MAIA midwife can be instrumental in assisting your family to transition smoothly after birth. We offer one time visits or a series of appointments to assist you through the postpartum adjustment period.
Whether having a Home Birth or a Hospital Birth, we recommend considering our Childbirth Education Class for LGBTQ Families.
